Donald "Don" McLaughlin, Jr.
Representative-Elect
Texas House District 80Atascosa, Dimmit, Frio, Uvalde, Webb, and Zavala counties
“There’s nothing fancy or political about doing right by the people of this district. I don’t mind telling politicians to get off their butts and do something to provide positive change in Texas.” -Don McLaughlin
BIO: An unwavering champion for his community and fearless advocate for South Texas values, Don McLaughlin does not back down. Not from a challenge, not from speaking out for what is right, and certainly not from protecting his constituents. Since his election as Mayor of Uvalde in 2014, Don has repeatedly proven that he is a steadfast leader in the face of adversity. His small town has weathered many crises including two historic and deadly winter storms, two major immigration surges, a pandemic lasting two years, and the horrific shooting at Robb Elementary that occurred in 2022. Through it all, Don’s selfless commitment to the safety and well-being of the people he serves has been a source of strength for the city’s resiliency and growth. Don’s strong response to these challenges resulted in a strengthened law enforcement presence and an initiative to build a mental health hospital which will break ground this year. Don’s service to those around him does not stop when he leaves his office in City Hall. He and his wife of 31 years, Karen, are active in their church and community. Don is also a founding member of the Cactus Jack Foundation which raises funds to support children in the local and surrounding areas through positive behavior incentives in the schools. As a father of two grown sons and a grandfather, Don recognizes that youth with strong morals and values build strong communities, and that requires excellent opportunities for education. As a successful small business owner with over 100 employees, Don has an impressive record of job creation that speaks volumes about his ability to drive economic growth. Don’s hands-on experience and understanding of the challenges faced by businesses and workers, uniquely positions him to champion policies that foster job creation, economic development, and prosperity in District 80. Don does not shy away from speaking the truth, even when it comes to checking leaders of his own party if he feels they are failing his community. He will not let South Texas be overlooked by politicians in Austin. When Don says he won’t back down, he means it, and that is the kind of leader we need in the Texas House.
